What is rheumatism?
Rheumatism is a collective term for over 200 different diseases that can have different causes. What they have in common is that they can cause pain in the joints and soft tissues as well as deformation of the joints.
Soft tissue includes muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursae, connective tissue, fatty tissue, blood vessels and nerves.
For the inflammatory rheumatism include
- All forms of arthritis: joint inflammation of various causes, including those resulting from bacterial or viral infections
- All forms of spondyloarthritis: inflammatory diseases of the spine and joints such as ankylosing spondylitis
- Vasculitis: inflammatory diseases of the blood vessels
- Collagenosis: connective tissue diseases such as scleroderma, Sjögren’s syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus.
Among non-inflammatory rheumatism fall
- Osteoarthritis: Degenerative diseases of the joints
- Crystal arthropathy: diseases such as gout or pseudogout
- Soft tissue rheumatism: All forms of soft tissue rheumatism, including fibromyalgia syndrome
- Bone diseases: Diseases such as osteoporosis
- Chronic back pain.
